According to data source provided by PRS India, in 2015 there were about five lakh road accidents in India, which killed about 1.5 lakh people. About 90% of accidents are caused due to driver’s fault or human error. This includes over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and hit and run cases. Other causes of road accidents include fault of others, accidents caused due to poor roads, defect in motor vehicle, and weather conditions etc. Right from developing AI based decision-making technologies for cars and by developing smart roads with advanced Traffic Management System can lead to drastic reduction in road accidents. Using AI based Driver Monitoring System directly connected with high speed data collection tools and information tools with Internet of Thing (IoT) can be used in vehicles for reducing the human decision making to prevent accidents and reduce death rates across the country caused due to human error. Majority of traffic incidents worldwide are both predictable and preventable, according to a UN General Secretariat report last year. Therefore, the use of AI or any smart device that perceives its environment and takes actions to achieve a goal from smart apps and integrated transport and traffic light system to self-driving or autonomous cars can dramatically reduce the number of road deaths in the country. Monitoring of poor roads and defective motor vehicles using advanced Traffic Management System and AI technology will further help drivers to anticipate the danger and reduce accidents upto larger extent. With advanced implementation of AI based intelligent traffic system, traffic department can understand the driving pattern and even misbehaviour of individual traffic participants at key traffic locations. This system, completely refined, should combine facial recognition AI with video and data analytics to monitor a driver’s behavior in real time. It should also aims to detect when a driver is feeling drowsy or distracted. Such system will not only enable prediction of driver's behaviour but will also help to prevent accidents within timely manner. Car manufacturing company should add technologies like automated emergency braking, lane departure prevention and ultimately autonomous driving in the list of their vehicle safety plan. We should invest and focus on developing AI based Smart Traffic Signal and Pedestrian System across all cities to track and monitor pedestrian movements so that vehicles connected to Traffic Management System should be able to detect traffic signs and pedestrians without any confusion and human error. India has a long way to go in terms of adapting to the advanced necessities of a connected or advanced traffic management system. There are many factors to take into consideration when building algorithms for a complex traffic management system in India, such as people, infrastructure, technology, automotive industry and others. However, with digital India slowly growing, we are definitely moving towards a future of seeing the Indian automotive industry and AI based solutions evolve and integrate into something more digital and more advanced than it already is.
